New Appointments to the Board of Directors

Dato’ Henry Barlow, a founding member of the CGM Council, transitions to the Board of Directors. With over 50 years of leadership experience in the plantation industry, including roles with the world’s largest plantation company, Dato’ Henry brings unparalleled expertise in corporate governance and sustainability practices, reinforcing CGM’s mission to drive impactful climate action.

 

Joining Dato’ Henry on the Board are three distinguished independent non-executive directors:

  • Tan Sri Tommy Thomas – A preeminent litigation lawyer with 45+ years of expertise and role in landmark cases, he has been recognised as a significant actor in the nation's legal system.

  • Tunku Dato’ Paduka Jaafar Laksamana Tunku Nong – A visionary leader committed to driving social impact and empowering communities through strategic governance, stakeholder engagement, and philanthropy.

  • Joseph D’ Cruz – A distinguished expert advancing sustainable palm oil through global collaboration,

    innovation and responsible practices.

 

We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to Datin Seri Sunita Rajakumar for her pivotal contributions to CGM's growth and success. Currently serving as a Non-Independent Director on the Board, Datin Seri Sunita will step down as Council Chair but will remain actively involved as the Founder and an esteemed Member of the CGM Council.

Dato' Henry Barlow

has been a dedicated member of the CGM Council for several years, bringing crucial expertise and unwavering commitment to advancing climate governance and sustainability in Malaysia.

 

Trained as a Chartered Accountant in London, Dato’ Henry has made Malaysia his home, contributing significantly to corporate leadership and environmental stewardship. With over 50 years of experience in the plantation industry, the last 30 with the Guthrie group and Golden Hope, followed by an impressive tenure from 2007 to 2022 with Sime Darby Berhad and its associated companies, his deep understanding of corporate governance and sustainable practices is unparalleled.

 

As an advocate for climate action and biodiversity conservation, Dato’ Henry has consistently championed meaningful initiatives that align with CGM's mission to drive sustainable progress.

Tunku Dato’ Paduka Jaafar Laksmana Tunku

Tunku Dato’ Paduka Jaafar Laksmana Tunku Nong
(Independent Non-Executive Director)

Currently serving on the Board of Trustees at Yayasan UEM Group Berhad, the philanthropic arm of UEM Group, Tunku Jaafar is deeply committed to empowering communities through robust educational systems and fostering meaningful engagement. 

 

His extensive expertise in strategic governance, stakeholder engagement, and philanthropy will be instrumental in advancing CGM’s initiatives.

Datin Seri Sunita Rajakumar 
(Founder, Non-Independent Director, Member of Council)

Datin Seri Sunita Rajakumar is a professional independent director and a strong advocate of the importance of governance in general and risk management in particular. 

​

She is Chairman of Bursa-listed Dutch Lady Milk Industries Bhd, independent non-executive director of Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd, HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad, MCIS Insurance Berhad (a member of the Sanlam group) and Zurich General Insurance Malaysia Berhad, as well as a trustee of 6 charitable foundations.

As a volunteer, she is the Founder, Non-Independent Director and Council Member of Climate Governance Malaysia [the country chapter of the World Economic Forum's Climate Governance Initiative], Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors Malaysia, member of the Global Advisory Board of Nottingham University's School of Business, the Advisory Panel of the UN Global Compact Malaysia's Sustainability Centre of Excellence and the External Advisory Committee for Sunway University's Master in Sustainable Development Management and the workstream lead for government policy for the CEO Action Network, an industry-led initiative to increase sustainability and climate resilience.

Tan Sri Tommy Thomas
(Independent Non-Executive Director)

Tommy Thomas read Law at the University of Manchester and International Relations at the London School of Economics. He is a Barrister (Middle Temple). He was called to the Malaysian Bar in 1976.


As a Barrister of 48 years standing, Thomas has had the privilege of appearing as Counsel in landmark cases in various branches of the law in all the courts of Malaysia, including the Privy Council in London, which was Malaysia’s highest court until 1985. Thomas has over 200 reported cases and hundreds of unreported cases.


He was a member of the Bar Council for over a decade. He was Editor of its publication, Insaf from 1984 to 1987 and Secretary from 1995 to 1997. Thomas has been involved in corporate governance issues and served as Chairman of the Company Law Forum in 1995. He was appointed by UNDP to be its Senior Consultant to study the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997-8. He subsequently edited its Corporate Governance publication on the crisis.


In June 2018, Thomas was appointed Attorney General of Malaysia. He was the first private practitioner since World War II appointed to the office direct from the Bar without any experience in the public service. After 20 months in office, he resigned when the Pakatan Harapan coalition government lost power.

Thomas regards himself as a social scientist, having abiding interests in economics, politics and history. He has written extensively and presented papers in these subjects, as well as on diverse legal subjects. He has published 2 books of essays. His memoirs “My Story: Justice in the Wilderness” published in January 2021 was critically acclaimed and is a best seller. It has been translated into Chinese.

Joseph D’ Cruz
(Independent Non-Executive Director)

Joseph (JD) D'Cruz | CEO, Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil  JD is the CEO of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, the world's leading sustainability standard for palm oil and associated products. He and his team work to define and demonstrate how such crops can be produced sustainably, and to ensure the availability of sustainably produced and certified palm oil products on the global market. 


Prior to this JD was the Special Advisor for Strategic Planning and Innovation and a member of the Executive Group at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). JD led the design and implementation of UNDP’s Strategic Plans and a range of transformation, futures and innovation initiatives from UNDP’s headquarters in New York. 


JD was born in Malaysia, and educated in Malaysia, Australia and the United Kingdom. He started his career as a management consultant working on business strategy, feasibility analysis, privatizations and sector strategies.
