Reflecting on 2024

As the year draws to a close, we at Climate Governance Malaysia would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for your continued support and engagement with CGM.

We’ve had an incredible 2024, and here are just some of the highlights:

Our inaugural International Advisory Panel (IAP) Summit—an exclusive, closed-door gathering—was held on 9 September 2024 in conjunction with our annual National Climate Governance Summit (NCGS). This pioneering event featured 7 esteemed climate leaders: Andrei Marcu, Karina Litvack, Ian Monroe, Philippe Joubert, Professor Dr. Jomo Kwame Sundaram, Professor Thakur S. Powdyel, and Professor Thelma Krug. Led by YB Nik Nazmi, the summit brought together policymakers, regulators, and corporate leaders to conduct an in-depth exploration of climate governance and align government policies with economic, climate, and energy priorities.

The second installment of our flagship event - National Climate Governance Summit 2024 - was a great success, with over 3,800 participants - a 60% increase from the previous year. This year featured 85 global and local speakers, and a series of 20 impactful workshops and masterclasses. Notably, participant satisfaction increased by 7.2%, with 82.6% of participants indicating they are likely to apply the knowledge gained. The summit's expanded reach was evident in collaborations with 11 universities, significantly surpassing the previous year's.

In conjunction with the Malaysia Pavilion at COP29, we held the Malaysian Support for COP29 Parallel Program. This program, supported by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) & PEMANDU, featured 62 sessions with 111 speakers from 12 countries. Session recordings were uploaded to YouTube within six hours, and the event was prominently featured on social media channels and broadcasted throughout the Malaysia Pavilion at COP29 in Baku.

The Directors’ Masterclass Series was hosted in collaboration with Bursa Malaysia and FIDE Forum, engaging over 300 corporate leaders from April to November. Led by directors - for directors - this six part series of masterclasses equipped leaders with essential skills to address climate-related challenges and navigate the complexities of climate governance - a step toward fostering climate-resilient leadership.

CGM has hosted four impactful webinars throughout the year, including a Nuclear Energy Webinar series and a Beyond COP webinar in collaboration with PwC. The latter attracted over 220 participants from various sectors including policymaking, industry, and sustainability. The 2023 Hornbill Award Ceremony celebrated the unwavering dedication of NGOs and CSOs to biodiversity conservation, with special recognition given to Shavez Cheema of 1Stop Borneo and Dr. Serina Rahman of Kelab Alami Tanjung Kupang for their exemplary contributions.

Thank you once again for being an integral part of the CGM community. Together, we are shaping a more sustainable future.

Wishing you a wonderful end to 2024 and a prosperous, climate-conscious New Year ahead!
